Blood in the Streets.' Defying their awful memories of 1988, when the Burmese junta massacred thousands, Buddhist monks led a massive protest in October. Soldiers opened fire to disperse a crowd, gunning down Kenji Nagai, a Japanese news photographer. The junta reported ten deaths in the crackdown, but Western officials suspect the real figure is far higher.
